Discover other forms of diving on five adventure dives during which you will learn new skills and increase your limits to 30 meters.
The Advanced Adventurer course is intended for people who already have a first-level certificate (Open Water Diver) and would like to acquire new diving skills, expand knowledge and gain more experience.
If you are not sure in which direction you want to develop as a diver, the best solution is to try some of the most useful specializations. This course allows you to try 5 different types of diving from the list below:
During the five training dives you will have the opportunity to:
During the Advanced Adventurer course, you will expand your knowledge and better understand some topics in the field of physics and physiology. We will delve into the decompression theory and talk about the factors that affect the process of diver saturation and desaturation.
You will learn, among other things, what nitrogen narcosis is (ecstasy of the depths) and what its symptoms and effect may be. We will also talk about oxygen toxicity and how to minimize the risks associated with breathing compressed gas at depths.
During the program, you will also learn about the benefits of diving with professional equipment and how the proper configuration affect you under water.
You will also learn safety procedures for deep, wreck and night diving and the potential hazards associated with this type of dives.
During this course, you will repeat the most important exercises, such as mask removal and gas-sharing. You will also learn how to properly distribute weights to achieve a horizontal diving position and how to move more effectively underwater using advanced techniques like the front and back kick. Some exercises will be performed dry on land to correct mistakes and develop proper muscle memory before entering the water. Once you are confident with the steps, you will practice them in shallow water.
As an advanced diver, you will learn to conduct an accurate weight check, calculate your SAC (Surface Air Consumption), and deploy a DSMB using various techniques. You will gain skills in advanced deep dive planning, taking into account no-decompression limits and available gas supply. Additionally, you’ll learn how to read a diving map and effectively combine natural navigation with compass techniques during your dives.
You will also master safe diving in limited visibility, including communication techniques using a flashlight. Furthermore, you’ll learn how to plan and conduct wreck dives, applying the 1/3 rule to ensure safety and proper gas management during the dive.
Thanks to this course, you will gain an understanding of the fundamental differences in the configuration of diving regulators, along with the advantages and disadvantages of different types in various diving conditions. You will also learn the critical importance of carrying a DSMB and discover the appropriate deployment techniques for different situations.
Additionally, you will develop a solid understanding of how a compass works and how to use it effectively both above and below the water.
During the course, you’ll have the opportunity to dive with trim pockets, which will assist in maintaining a horizontal position and achieving better buoyancy control. You’ll also understand the importance of having a spare mask while diving and master the skill of efficiently changing masks underwater.
Furthermore, you will learn how to communicate effectively using a torch during dives with limited visibility, ensuring clear and safe communication with your dive buddy.
On each of the 5 open water dives we will practice diving skills and some of them will be repeated many times to build your confidence. Parts of your training dives will be video-recorded for you and debriefed afterwards. You will be able to see yourself performing the skills and with the right feedback improve more quickly.
You might have the chance to experience nitrogen narcosis during deep diving and diving on a shipwreck. There are three navy wrecks on Koh Tao, and the largest one is nearly 50 meters long and 7 meters wide.
One of the best diving experiences you will get is night diving that also takes place near the reef with usage of UV light – that will be the closest feeling to the one being in Space! Usually marine life is more active at night so be prepared for unforgettable impressions!
Completing the course gives you a lifetime certificate allowing you to dive independently up to 30 meters with a diving partner who is at the same level as you or higher.
The Advanced Adventurer course is recommended for certified scuba divers who are not sure in which direction they would like to develop. During this program you will have a chance to try 5 different specialities after which you will be able to enroll into a full speciality course any time in the future.
Perhaps you would like to improve your underwater position and buoyancy control or be able to plan the deep dive and navigate it by using compass and natural navigation skills? Have you ever wondered how it is to feel weightless in darkness surrounded by fluorescent corals that glow with the help of UV light?
You can try many different specialties such as wreck diving, night diving or deep diving and once you know what are you interested at you will be ready to enroll into a full course.
The course usually lasts 2 to 3 days, depending on your availability.
Day one begins with theory and dry land skills in the field of buoyancy, movement techniques and compass navigation skills.
Then we start the training part in the water – these are two dives, where you will practice the above skills and, in addition, we will repeat some of the skills from your Open Water Diver course.
On the second day, we start with theory again – this time in the field of deep and wreck diving, and then we do another two dives from a boat (max. 30m).
The last, fifth dive is a night dive, which takes place just after sunset, among the coral reef and active marine life.
The Advanced Adventurer course is not mandatory; however, it is highly recommended if you are a certified Open Water Diver looking to develop your skills but are unsure which direction to take next.
This course allows you to participate in adventure dives across five different specializations, helping you gain new skills and discover your interests. Additionally, it gives you the opportunity to continue with a full specialty course in the area that excites you the most.
During this course, you will improve your buoyancy control, making you feel more comfortable and confident underwater. You’ll also prepare for deeper dives beyond 18 meters (max. 30m), expanding your diving capabilities. Moreover, you will learn how to read a diving map, prepare a detailed dive plan, and navigate underwater using a compass, ensuring you are well-equipped for more advanced underwater adventures.
SSI Advanced Adventurer is the equivalent of PADI Advanced Open Water Diver. However, SSI automatically issues a special card titled “SSI Advanced Open Water Diver” after the diver has logged 24 dives and completed 4 specialized training courses.
Advanced Adventurer course costs THB 12.500 per person and includes SSI fees, training materials, equipment rental, and five training dives with an instructor in a ratio of 2:1
Some diving schools on Koh Tao offer the course at a lower price, but remember that this might involve a larger number of students in the group during the training (even up to 6:1) – which may affect the quality of your course.
As an instructor who has worked in many places around the World, I can say that Koh Tao is one of the best places to train diving in terms of value for money and diving conditions. The water is warm all year round, visibility is perfect most of the time and the quality of training in most of the cases is on the top level.
We have everything we need for solid training, including buoyancy control and navigation skills. Around the island, you will find a lot of diving sites, both shallow and deep, rich in marine life, and coral reefs, but also huge naval wrecks up to 50 meters long or even caverns!
I have trained several hundred divers, thanks to which I gained extensive teaching experience. Many of my students come back, and some of them never left - today they are active dive professionals.
I am a demanding instructor with attention to detail for whom the work is not finished until the student achieves a satisfactory result. Learn the art of diving at the highest level with an instructor passionate about this.
Many years of volunteering have helped me understand the value of supporting other people and the need to be understanding for others.
Let me be your underwater Angel :).
I always put safety above everything else and with my lifeguard experience you will be in good hands.
When safety is ensured - then we can have fun!
Big credits go to my diving instructor Angie for being so patient, professional and cool! She made our days underwater and above unforgettable and played a huge role in making me fall in love with diving. When deciding I wanted to do the next level a week later, it was clear that I would only do it with her! Thank you for everything Angie!
Shout out to my incredible instructor Angie who is a great instructor, and most importantly made the whole diving course an amazing experience. I will keep on great memories of the course and dives and look forward to doing the next level courses with her soon!
Instructor Angie was amazing. Her perfectionist approach ensured all divers were performing the skills above and beyond the SSI standards. Even though she was a stickler for the standards, she still made the lessons fun and engaging. She was also great to have a beer with afterward! I was a little nervous before I began, but now I feel very confident underwater. I’m glad I chose this instructor for my diving courses and would recommend it to anyone looking to dive in Thailand.
